- 6 June, 12:40 PM

Smartphone manufacturer OPPO has announced the conclusion of a global licensing agreement with Volkswagen, which provides the automaker with access to OPPO's patent portfolio in the field of mobile communications, in particular on 5G technology.

Under the agreement, these patents will be licensed to improve the user experience in the connected car space around the world.

"We are delighted to collaborate with Volkswagen through this patent licensing agreement," said Vincent Lin, head of patent licensing at OPPO.

This is OPPO's first bilateral licensing agreement with an automaker in the connected car space, indicating the broader application of its technologies beyond smartphones - particularly in the automotive industry.

"The partnership with OPPO is an example of efficient, respectful, business focused collaboration in the space of licensing of Standard Essential Patents," said Robin Chefay, Director of IP Licensing at Volkswagen. He emphasized the company's commitment to recognizing the value of intellectual property and finding sustainable solutions.

OPPO's 5G patents cover more than 40 countries and regions, and according to analytics platform LexisNexis IPlytics, as of January 2025, the company ranks 8th in the world in terms of the strength of its 5G patent portfolio.

As of March 2025, OPPO has filed over 113,000 patent applications and has over 62,000 registered patents worldwide. The company continues to invest in key technologies, including 5G/6G, artificial intelligence, charging, imaging, and video.
