In a few weeks, OpenAI will release its own browser to compete with Google Chrome
OpenAI is preparing to introduce its own web browser with artificial intelligence integration to compete with the world's most popular Google Chrome. According to Reuters, the product is scheduled to launch in the coming weeks and will be focused on changing the way users interact with web content.
According to the publication's sources, the browser from OpenAI will run on the basis of Google's open source Chromium and will include a chat interface similar to ChatGPT. Thanks to such integration, users will be able to perform tasks without going to websites - for example, book services or fill out forms directly in the browser. It is also reported that OpenAI will integrate into its browser "Operator" - a company agent for browsing web pages on behalf of the user, as a key feature.
OpenAI is looking to use the browser as a channel for collecting user data, which is critical to competing with Google. With over 500 million weekly active users, ChatGPT could be an alternative to Chrome, a vital component of Alphabet’s advertising business that generates nearly three-quarters of its revenue.
Although Chrome currently holds over two-thirds of the global browser market, competition from OpenAI, as well as startups such as Perplexity, which has already unveiled its AI browser, is intensifying.
OpenAI does not comment on the plans, but it is known that the company decided to create its own browser instead of a plugin in order to have more control over the collected data.
