OpenAI has ambitious plans to create an "AI-powered super assistant that deeply understands you and is your interface to the internet," according to a document that emerged in the US Justice Department's antitrust lawsuit against Google.
Although much of the document is redacted, it does shed light on some of OpenAI's plans. In particular, it shows the ChatGPT developer's desire to rethink how we use the internet by creating a new AI interface.
The document describes the super assistant as an "intelligent entity with T-shaped skills." This agent would potentially be personalized to the user and available anywhere ChatGPT is available. The "T-shaped" shape is because it has deep knowledge and broad skills to perform "daunting daily tasks."
According to OpenAI, this super assistant will be able to perform any task: answer questions, find housing, keep in touch with a lawyer, sign you up for a gym, plan a vacation, buy a gift, manage your calendar, keep a to-do list, send emails, and much more.
The super assistant was in the company's plans for the first half of 2025, but this is the first mention of such a tool. OpenAI has not yet made any announcements of new products or similar agents, and with the first half of the year already coming to an end, the company will probably have to move the release date.
The document also mentions a "broader play" that would potentially bring ChatGPT to the search engine, browser, and even operating system markets. But what exactly that product will be remains unknown, as the key word in the paragraph has been removed.
"Then there's the broader game: building a super assistant, and then [REDACTED]. Now we're dealing with search engines, browsers, even interacting with real people. It's not a direct confrontation. It's about solving more and more use cases and gradually bringing users in. That's why we don't call our product a search engine, a browser, or an OS - it's just ChatGPT," the document says.
As a reminder, OpenAI acquired iPhone designer Jony Ive's startup in late May. As a result, the company is preparing its first physical product, which can be worn around the neck and will be slightly larger than the AI Pin.
