OpenAI has confirmed plans to release GPT-5 this summer. The new model will combine key advances from previous series — the multimodality of GPT-4 and the logical capabilities of the "o" series. The company aims to create a single powerful model that will eliminate the need to switch between different versions, writes BleepingComputer.
"We're truly excited to not just make a net new great frontier model, we're also going to unify our two series," said Romain Yue, head of developer work at OpenAI.
According to him, GPT-5 will combine a "breakthrough in reasoning" and a "breakthrough in multimodality."
On the Reddit forum, the company's vice president Jerry Tworek added that GPT-5 should make all the current capabilities of the models better and more convenient, without the need for switching.
The exact launch date has not yet been revealed, but OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously hinted that the release is planned for the summer of 2025.
