Samsung unveils revolutionary 5000 ppi OLED panel for XR headsets

Samsung Display, one of the world's leading display manufacturers, has unveiled a new OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) panel for augmented reality (XR) headsets. The presentation took place at the Society for Information Display 2025 exhibition, SamMobile reports.

The new 1.4-inch panel boasts an incredible resolution of 5000 ppi. The company says that it exceeds the image resolution of even 8K TVs in terms of equivalent. The display has a maximum brightness of 15,000 nits and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The panel’s color gamut is 99% of the DCI-P3, which provides a rich and realistic image.

Samsung also introduced a brighter RGB OLEDoS display with a resolution of 4200 ppi and a record brightness of 20,000 nits. This is the company’s most powerful RGB OLEDoS panel to date, significantly exceeding previous models: in 2024, the peak brightness was 5,000 nits, and at CES 2025, it was 10,000 nits.

OLEDoS technology is different in that organic materials are deposited directly onto a silicon substrate, rather than onto glass. This allows for a significant reduction in pixel size to tens of micrometers, allowing for a huge number of pixels to fit into a small area.

OLED-on-silicon panels are used in augmented, mixed, virtual and augmented reality headsets. By the way, there are two types of OLEDoS panels: with white OLED backlight and RGB filters, as well as with individual RGB subpixels, which provide higher brightness and color accuracy.

Unfortunately, it is not yet known when the new Samsung OLEDoS panels will appear in devices.
