Obsidian Entertainment is pleased with Avowed sales and hints at DLC and a sequel
From a Bloomberg interview with the development director of the role-playing game Avowed, Carrie Patel, it became known that the Obsidian Entertainment studio is satisfied with the sales of the new project and is considering how to expand the Pillars of Eternity/ Avowed universe further.
Among other things, it was revealed that Avowed was six years in development, during which the game underwent two reboots. In 2021, development leadership passed to Kerry Patel, who had worked at Obsidian since 2013, first as a narrative designer (Pillars of Eternity), then as an assistant lead narrative designer (Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire), lead narrative designer (The Outer Worlds), and finally as game director (The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon, Avowed).
Development of Avowed began in 2018 and was initially scheduled for a 2020 release after Obsidian Entertainment was acquired by Microsoft , but the project was instead restarted. After Kerry Patel joined the team, the developers increased Avowed's connection to the Pillars of Eternity universe, and divided the open world into more open areas for development. The updated Avowed was re-announced in 2023 with a fall 2024 release date, but was later pushed back to 2025 to avoid competing with STALKER 2.
Avowed's sales figures are not disclosed, but the company said it is pleased with the results so far.
Obsidian Entertainment isn't saying what's next for the team led by Carrie Patel, but the designer says she wants to continue leading the development. The idea of creating something new sounds appealing, she says, but it seems more likely that she'll build on the foundation laid by Avowed to create expansions or sequels for the game.
"Now that we've built this amazing world, and developed the team's strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in that world, I'd like to see us do more with it," concluded Carrie Patel.
