NVIDIA acquires synthetic data startup Gretel — Wired

NVIDIA has acquired synthetic data startup Gretel, Wired reports.

Gretel, based in San Diego, has developed a platform for generating synthetic data for training artificial intelligence. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Wired reported that the acquisition price exceeded nine figures, which is more than the startup's recent valuation of $320 million.

Gretel and its team of about 80 employees will join NVIDIA, where their technologies will be integrated into a suite of AI services for developers

Gretel was founded in 2019 by Alex Watson, Laszlo Bock, John Myers, and Ali Golshan, who is also the company's CEO. The startup customizes models, adds its own technology, and packages those models for sale.

Prior to its launch, Gretel had raised over $67 million in venture capital from investors including Anthos Capital, Greylock, and Moonshots Capital.

NVIDIA’s acquisition is strategic and timely. Tech giants like Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic are already using synthetic data to train their core AI models as they run out of real-world data sources.
