NVIDIA funded Bill Gates' nuclear project
NVIDIA, one of the world's leading chipmakers, has joined a funding round for Bill Gates-founded nuclear company TerraPower . NVIDIA's investment arm, NVentures, has joined the $650 million round to develop a next-generation Natrium reactor.
The funds will go towards completing the construction of Natrium's first commercial facility in Wyoming, USA, although the project is still awaiting final regulatory approval, scheduled for 2026. If successful, the reactor will produce 345 MW of electricity. Similar facilities are also planned for deployment both in the US and abroad.
Natrium technology involves the use of a sodium coolant combined with a gigawatt energy storage system, which should provide higher safety, cost-effectiveness and simplified construction. In addition to NVIDIA and Gates himself, HD Hyundai has also joined the investors.
NVIDIA's move reflects the growing interest of leading technology players in nuclear power as a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy source for AI and future data center infrastructure.
