LG's new display technology could increase smartphone battery life

LG Display has announced the release of a new generation of Hybrid Tandem OLED displays, which should provide 15% less power consumption compared to traditional OLED panels. According to the manufacturer, this can add 30-60 minutes of additional screen-on time to smartphones, reports Android Authority.

OLED displays use red, green and blue organic light-emitting diodes to produce images. Blue LEDs traditionally consume more power and degrade more quickly than red and green LEDs, limiting the lifespan of the display and requiring a trade-off between brightness and durability. LG Display’s hybrid technology combines the advantages of both approaches: the stability of conventional panels with the added energy savings of a phosphorescent layer.

The company has already entered mass production and will introduce Hybrid Tandem OLED in smartphone and tablet formats at SID Display Week on May 11 in Los Angeles. Device manufacturers will be testing how the new panels work with advanced features such as LTPO with variable refresh rate and extreme peak brightness.

Displays typically consume 30–50% of a smartphone’s power when active, especially at high brightness. Reducing their power consumption by 15% can result in an overall battery saving of 5–10%. For users, this could mean up to half an hour of extra screen time with heavy use, or up to an hour with moderate use.

Combining this technology with new types of batteries, such as silicon-carbon or solid-state, could allow next-generation smartphones to last longer than the standard 24 hours without recharging.

LG Display did not name specific partners or the timing of the first devices with Hybrid Tandem OLED, but said that mass production will begin in late 2025. "We expect the first smartphones with our hybrid OLED panels to appear on the market within the next year," the company said.
