Huawei introduced the first laptop with its own operating system HarmonyOS
Chinese company Huawei, which recently lost its license to produce Windows devices, has introduced the first laptop equipped with its own operating system HarmonyOS 5, also known as HarmonyOS Next, reports the South China Morning Post.
There is still little information about both the laptop itself and the operating system, but it is known that the release of the new device will take place on May 19, 2025. So far, it is known that HarmonyOS Next will be able to run both individual PC applications and some smartphone applications. Externally, the operating system resembles a mix between macOS and Windows with mobile icons.
Huawei has also equipped the laptop with its own AI assistant, Celia, which can perform a variety of tasks, such as creating presentations, summarizing meetings, or searching for data in local documents, if given access to the necessary software.
The device comes with a variety of Chinese software for work and entertainment. Among the pre-installed applications are the WPS office suite, which is an analogue of Microsoft Office, and the DingTalk teamwork platform from Alibaba.
With support for mobile apps, HarmonyOS Next also features social network RedNote, which recently gained popularity during the US TikTok ban, video platform Bilibili, and collaboration tool Feishu from ByteDance. The laptop is expected to support over 2,000 apps by the end of the year.
As for the laptop itself, it looks very similar to the Huawei Matebook X Pro, has three USB-C ports, and HarmonyOS engraving on the lid. That's all that's known about the new product so far.
Recall that HarmonyOS was initially developed as a mobile operating system. The Chinese company resorted to this after the ban on using Android in its smartphones. However, under the threat of losing its Windows license, Huawei began adapting the OS for laptops, as reported in March.
