Nintendo expects to sell 15 million Switch 2s by March 2026
Nintendo expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles in the fiscal year ending in March 2026. This is the company's first official forecast for the new device, writes CNBC.
The company also published its fourth-quarter and full-year 2024 results. Revenue for the January-March period was ¥208.7 billion ($1.45 billion), below analysts' expectations. Net income was ¥41.6 billion, down nearly 50% from a year ago.
Demand for the Switch 2 has already weighed on sales of the current model, with 10.8 million units sold in the year, down 31% from last year. However, Nintendo believes the Switch 2 will have a stronger launch than its predecessor thanks to the first model's more than 100 million active users.
Marketing firm Omdia expects Nintendo to sell 14.7 million Switch 2s in 2025 alone, which would be about 10% more than when the original Switch was released.
However, Nintendo clarified that all its forecasts take into account US tariffs in effect as of April 10, 2025, after President Donald Trump temporarily suspended the introduction of reciprocal tariffs for a number of countries.
In April, Nintendo suspended pre-orders for the Switch 2 in the US after Donald Trump announced plans to impose broad tariffs on many countries. Since the company's consoles are manufactured in Vietnam, the country would be subject to a 46% tariff if the tariffs were reinstated. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said that if additional tariffs were imposed, the prices of the products would have to be reviewed.
In addition to the forecast of sales of 15 million consoles, Nintendo also expects to sell 45 million units of software (games) by March 2026. As a reminder, the Switch 2 will cost $449.
