Netflix adds HDR10+ support for better viewing of movies and TV shows
Netflix has announced support for HDR10+ for streaming content. This complements the existing HDR10 and Dolby Vision formats that the platform has long offered. HDR10+ technology provides improved picture quality with greater color accuracy and detail in each frame, which is important for dark scenes in movies and TV shows.
The new format is supported by the AV1 codec, which was created in 2018 for efficient data compression. Netflix initially introduced the codec to save mobile data, but AV1 is now being used to stream large HDR files. Some popular movies are already available in HDR10+, and the company plans to convert all HDR content to this standard in the future.
Viewers with a Netflix Premium subscription and devices that support HDR10+ and AV1 will be the first to experience the improved content.
