Speedtest blocked in Russia
Roskomnadzor has restricted access to the Speedtest service from Ookla in Russia, Russian media outlet Meduza reported. The blocking was explained by "threats to the security of the functioning of the public communications network and the Russian segment of the Internet."
The agency advised users to switch to "trusted Russian services," in particular, ProSet, an application for checking connection speed that was specially developed in 2024.
The possible blocking of Speedtest was reported back in October 2024. At that time, Roskomnadzor said that the service could be restricted if threats to the stability or security of the Russian network infrastructure were identified. In the same month, a court in Moscow fined Ookla 6 million rubles for refusing to localize user data in Russia.
The service blocking occurred against the backdrop of regular mobile Internet outages in various regions of the country. According to the "On the Line" initiative, by the end of June, restrictions had covered more than half of the Russian regions.
