Ming-Chi Kuo: iPhone 18 line will receive 2nm chips

- 24 March, 03:27 PM

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has confirmed that the A20 chips in the 2018 iPhone models will be manufactured using TSMC's 2nm process technology.

Kuo said that TSMC's trial production of 2nm chips showed good results. At the output, more than 60-70% of the chips were functional. By "output" we mean the percentage of working chips that can be obtained from a single silicon wafer - a large circular disk on which the chips are located.

The move from a 3nm to 2nm process will allow more transistors to be placed on each chip, which will increase its performance. In particular, the A20 chips are expected to be up to 15% faster and up to 30% more power efficient than the A19.
