Microsoft has announced the launch of two new artificial intelligence models that were developed and trained entirely by its internal teams, Engadget reports.

The MAI-Voice-1 model is the company's first model for generating natural speech, and MAI-1-preview is a text model that became Microsoft's first fundamental AI solution built from scratch.

MAI-Voice-1 is already integrated into Copilot Daily and Podcast. The MAI-1-preview text model is currently available for testing on the LMArena platform, and is planned to be used in selected Copilot scenarios in the near future.

According to Mustafa Suleiman, head of Microsoft’s AI division, both models were built with an emphasis on efficiency and cost-effectiveness. MAI-Voice-1 runs on a single GPU, while MAI-1-preview was trained on about 15,000 Nvidia H-100 GPUs. By comparison, xAI’s Grok model required more than 100,000 of these chips.

Suleiman noted that the key to training models is to carefully select data that truly contributes to learning, without wasting computational resources on inefficient tokens.

While Microsoft Copilot is currently based on OpenAI's GPT technology, the launch of its own models demonstrates the company's desire for autonomy in the field of AI. Suleiman also said that Microsoft has a five-year development plan, which is funded quarterly.
