Microsoft will replace Remote Desktop with a new Windows App in May 2025
Microsoft will officially end support for the Remote Desktop app for Windows on May 27, 2025. To continue connecting to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box, users will need to switch to the new Windows App.
"Connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box via the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be blocked after May 27, 2025. For all other users, the Remote Desktop app will no longer be supported," the company said in a statement.
The new Windows App, which Microsoft is releasing in September 2024 on Android, iOS, macOS, iPadOS, and Windows, will offer users the same functionality, but with additional features. In particular, users will get support for multiple monitors and dynamic resolution.
At the same time, the company notes that users connecting to remote desktops from the Remote Desktop app should use Remote Desktop Connection until support for this connection type becomes available in the Windows App.
