Microsoft is developing its own LLM series that can compete with OpenAI models
According to Bloomberg, Microsoft is working on a series of large language models (LLMs), dubbed MAI, that could be a serious competitor to OpenAI and Anthropic algorithms.
The name MAI is likely an abbreviation for "Microsoft Artificial Intelligence." It could also be a reference to the Maia 100 AI chip that the company announced last year. It's believed to be the processor that powers the new models.
Microsoft has already tested MAI with integration into Copilot to evaluate their performance, and the results show that these models are competitive with models from OpenAI and Anthropic.
The integration into Copilot suggests that the MAI series will be aimed at general use. But there is also information that Microsoft is working on a second series of models optimized for solving complex logic tasks.
The development of MAI could reduce Microsoft's reliance on OpenAI, which was previously the exclusive cloud provider for Copilot. In the future, Microsoft plans to integrate not only its own models into Copilot , but also algorithms from other companies, such as Anthropic, Meta, DeepSeek, and xAI. This will strengthen the corporation's position in the field of artificial intelligence.
