Microsoft says it "overstepped the mark" with game prices

Microsoft has admitted that The Outer Worlds 2's initial price of $80 was too high, and has reverted to $70, which is now the standard for major releases on the market, Windows Central reports.

The decision to change the price was a response to a wave of criticism after the announcement of increasing the cost of Xbox games to $80. The Outer Worlds 2 was supposed to be the first project under the new policy, but players and even some Obsidian developers called such a price unjustified.

"We’re focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99 – in line with current market conditions," Microsoft said.

Players who already pre-ordered the game for $80 will receive a refund and can re-order at the reduced price. Microsoft said some stores will begin accepting refunds immediately, while others will begin accepting refunds in the coming days.

Pricing in the gaming industry has become a topic of discussion in recent years, especially after Nintendo and other publishers raised prices for their new projects.
