- 13 October, 04:07 PM

Microsoft has announced the LINGUA competition to make European languages more represented in artificial intelligence. The initiative was announced in a blog post by the company's vice president and president, Brad Smith. Ukrainian organizations are also invited to participate.

The LINGUA competition is an invitation for researchers, NGOs, cultural institutions and startups to create high-quality open datasets that will help digitally underserved languages, including Ukrainian, to strengthen their presence in the AI world. The initiative is launched in coordination with the APERTUS project (led by EPFL and ETH Zürich) and in consultation with the Council of Europe.

Selected projects will receive:

  • Funding of up to $50,000 for data collection activities (larger projects will be considered individually);
  • Azure compute credits for up to two years to support your data processing needs;
  • technical support and opportunities for collaboration with the Microsoft AI for Good Lab, EPFL and ETH Zürich;
  • media support through the Microsoft AI for Good Lab ecosystem and partner networks.

The application process for LINGUA began on September 26, 2025, but all interested parties still have time to register until November 11, 2025. Selected projects will be announced on January 20, 2026.
