Microsoft is moving to passwordless accounts: new users will be offered better alternatives

- 2 May, 12:39 PM

Microsoft has announced that new accounts will now be created without passwords by default. Users will be offered more secure authentication methods: passkeys, push notifications, or physical security keys. This is reported by The Verge.

The company has also updated the login window, simplifying the process for users who choose passwordless login. Existing accounts will remain with passwords, but owners can manually delete them in settings.

Microsoft says that nearly a million access keys are registered every day, and that their login success rate is 98%, compared to 32% for passwords. In anticipation of "Password Day," which traditionally falls in May, the company has also decided to change its name to "Access Key Day."
