Meta launches Hyperscape — a technology for transforming real spaces into VR copies

18 September, 12:39 PM

Meta has introduced a new technology called Hyperscape, which allows you to scan a real room and create a photorealistic virtual copy of it using the Quest VR headset, The Verge reports.

Starting September 18, 2025, Quest 3 and Quest 3S owners will be able to test the beta version of the Hyperscape Capture app. At first, scanned rooms will only be viewable by yourself, but Meta will eventually add the ability to invite others via a private link.

The technology was first shown at Meta Connect 2024, and at this year's conference, journalists tested several demonstration rooms, including Gordon Ramsay's kitchen. The interiors looked very similar to the real thing, with the ability to see small details - from the food on the table to the stack of books. However, if you get too close, the illusion is broken.

Meta also gave us a short demo of the scanning mode. The user walked around the room in the headset, and a virtual grid was superimposed on objects in real time. After three minutes, the program suggested moving closer for more detail, and the grid began to disappear.

According to Meta, after a full scan, the data is uploaded to the cloud, where it is processed for several hours. Only then can the user visit the created VR copy of the room.

The company sees Hyperscape as a promising direction for VR and the metaverse, although its focus has shifted more towards artificial intelligence recently. Despite this, Meta believes that virtual reproduction of real spaces could be one of the key features of the Quest headsets.
