Meta is still launching an artificial intelligence chatbot in Europe
Meta is launching its AI chatbot in Europe, nearly a year after it paused its launch in the region. Meta AI will be available on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger in 41 European countries, The Verge reports.
The company had intended to launch the chatbot in Europe back in 2023, but the rollout was put on hold due to a ban on learning from content posted by Facebook and Instagram users. The company also halted the launch of its multimodal artificial intelligence model Llama AI in the European Union due to regulatory concerns.
For now, Meta says its AI assistant will only work as a chatbot for users in Europe, helping to generate ideas, plan trips, or answer specific questions using information from the internet.
European users will also be able to use Meta AI to search for specific content in their Instagram feed. However, they will not be able to use the tool to create or edit images.
Meta began integrating some AI features into Ray-Bans smart glasses in the EU last November, but the glasses don't currently support multimodal features that allow users to ask Meta AI what they're seeing. Meta isn't abandoning plans to add more features to the European version of Meta AI, and the company says it will work to achieve "parity with the US" and expand its capabilities over time.
