Lisbon, Madrid, Seville, Barcelona and Valencia were reportedly affected. The outage occurred around 12:30 Central European Time.
According to Sky News, the Madrid Open tournament has been suspended. The Madrid subway has been evacuated and traffic lights are out in the city. The power outage has also affected air traffic in Spain and Portugal, causing disruptions at airports.
Red Eléctrica, Spain's national electricity grid operator, said it was working with energy companies to restore power to the affected areas.
"We have begun restoring electricity to the north and south of the peninsula, which is important for the gradual restoration of electricity supply," the company said in its latest statement.
