Bungie postpones Marathon release indefinitely
The release of Marathon, Bungie's new extraction shooter, has been postponed indefinitely following a plagiarism scandal and negative reviews following its alpha testing. The game was previously scheduled for release on September 23, 2025.
In an official statement, Bungie says that after collecting and evaluating player feedback, it became clear that more time was needed to complete Marathon.
"Through every comment and real-time conversation on social media and Discord, your voice has been strong and clear. We've taken this to heart, and we know we need more time to craft Marathon into the game that truly reflects your passion. After much discussion within our Dev team, we’ve made the decision to delay the September 23rd release," the studio said in a statement.
The studio will continue closed beta testing of the game and will be rolling out new features and improvements over the coming months. Among the promised changes are increased survivability, improved AI and graphics, more rewards and loot, changes to combat, improved solo and co-op experiences, and the introduction of new narrative and gameplay elements that, among other things, should make the game more similar to the original trilogy.
Bungie promises that it will share more about the game's progress in the fall of 2025, including a new release date.
As a reminder, last month Marathon, which was announced back in 2023, was embroiled in a scandal over the use of artwork by artist Antireal without her permission. Bungie blamed a former employee for the incident. The studio also promised to review all other elements of the game to ensure that a similar situation does not happen again.
