French President Emmanuel Macron said that if no progress is made at the European Union level on regulating social media for teenagers, he himself will block them for children under 15 for "a few months," Politico reported.
Greece, with the support of France and Spain, is currently trying to push through legislation in the EU that would significantly limit the time teenagers spend online, while Macron said in a statement to French media that he wanted the process to move faster.
He later made the same statement on his social media account X (formerly Twitter), where he noted that major platforms already have tools to verify users' ages.
Meanwhile, the French government has already made some progress on this issue. The state is trying to force sites like X, Reddit, Bluesky, and Mastodon to implement age verification by classifying them as pornographic sites.
Starting June 7, 2025, a law came into effect in France that forces pornographic websites to verify the age of their users, which led to Pornhub shutting down in the country. At the same time, demand for VPN services increased.
We remind you that in May it became known that the EU wants to limit children's access to social networks and introduce a "digital age of majority." At the same time, processes are also underway in other regions to restrict social networks for children, in particular, a corresponding law was adopted in Australia and Texas, USA.
