After the conclusion of the keynote presentation at WWDC 2025, Apple announced important news - macOS 26, also known as macOS Tahoe, will be the final version of the system for Macs with Intel processors. This is reported by Engadget.

These devices will have full access to new features and will continue to receive security updates for another three years, but by 2028 they will finally leave the Apple ecosystem.

Apple first introduced Apple Silicon processors in 2020. Since then, the company has moved all of its devices to its own chips, which are significantly more powerful and energy-efficient than Intel. Apple Silicon processors with ARM architecture are able to perform more operations with less power compared to Intel x86 processors. Most older Intel-based Macs are no longer receiving updates, and now the company has officially set a support deadline for the rest.

The announcement came during the Platform State of the Union meeting after the keynote and was aimed primarily at developers. Apple is urging them to prepare for the post-Intel era and ensure a smooth transition for itself and its users. macOS 26 and macOS 27 will still support Rosetta, which allows x86 apps to run on ARM devices. After that, Rosetta will remain only for supporting older video games.

Intel-based Macs compatible with macOS Tahoe include the MacBook Pro 16" (2019), MacBook Pro 13" (2020), iMac 27" (2020), and Mac Pro (2019).

Recall that at WWDC 2025, Apple also introduced iOS 26, watchOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26, features for AirPods, and a new Games app.
