The next MacBook Pro model won't get any major updates, but there will be more upgrades in 2026 with the M6 processor
The MacBook Pro with its current look and in-house processors was introduced in 2021. Since then, aside from newer chips and the option of a Nano-texture matte display, the updated models haven't had much to offer. As Mark Gurman notes in his weekly newsletter, this situation will continue until next year.
Thus, by the end of 2025, another update will appear, which will mainly affect only the M5 processor. Anyone who wants a larger redesign and more updates will have to wait until the 2026 model range is released. And there are still a couple of interesting things in the company's plans along with the new chips.
Previously, an insider mentioned that Apple plans to replace the current IPS-matrix with mini-LED backlighting with OLED. And it will be a Tandem OLED like the one that got the iPad Pro with M4 almost a year ago. So we can expect higher brightness, significantly better contrast and additional saturation.
In fact, last year's rumors even emphasized that such a display could change the current design of the webcam cutout in favor of a smaller one. Almost literally repeating the history with the cutouts in previous iPhones and those using Android smartphones. However, it is still unknown whether Apple will manage to "move" the Dynamic Island from the iPhone to the MacBook Pro.
Another significant improvement could be a new chassis. Although there are no details on this at the moment, the 2026 generation of MBP is planned to be thinner than the current one. And that would be really good, especially for the 16-inch model, whose dimensions are currently 355.7×248.1×16.8 mm and weigh 2.14 kg. And we have already met even smaller gaming laptops.
This year, new MacBook Pros with M5 are expected around the same time as the update to the current versions — that is, in October.
