NVIDIA to open quantum computing research lab
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang announced at the company's annual developer conference that the company will establish a quantum computing research lab in Boston, working in collaboration with scientists from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Reuters reports.
The program comes after Huang said in January that quantum computers would be 20 years away. In addition to the scientists, the NVIDIA Accelerated Quantum Research Center, which the company calls NVAQC, will also collaborate with other quantum firms, including Quantinuum, Quantum Machines, and QuEra Computing. Work on the center is expected to begin later this year.
Regarding the claim that quantum computers would be available in 20 years, Huang also invited all guests to explain why he was wrong.
"This is the first event in history where a company CEO invites all of the guests to explain why he was wrong," Huang said.
Huang met with executives from more than a dozen quantum technology companies, some of which are looking to make money before quantum computers can outperform current devices. Infleqtion CEO Matt Kinsella said his company already offers advanced computing clocks that improve synchronization between classical computing chips.
