Chinese maglev train sets new speed record

- 20 June, 12:41 PM

China's Donghu Laboratory has tested a test train on a magnetic levitation (maglev) weighing just over a ton. On a short section of just 600 meters long, the train accelerated to 650 km/h in 7 seconds, setting a record. Such acceleration is possible thanks to special linear motors and magnetic systems that lift the train above the track, writes Interesting Engineering

During the test, the train stopped at this speed in just 200 meters. The secret is that the computer control system tracks the position of the train with an accuracy of a few millimeters. Thanks to this, the train accelerates and brakes as quickly and safely as possible.

Typically, testing such high-speed trains requires large tracks, tens of kilometers long. But China decided to build a short test section, just 1 km long. It is designed for fast acceleration and braking, so tests can be carried out more often and more cheaply. In addition, the compact section allows for experimentation with many technologies: train shape, electronic systems and even cooling.

China's Donghu Laboratory has shown that even on a short test stretch, maglev can be safely accelerated to incredible speeds. In the future, these developments will help make travel faster, more comfortable, and more affordable for many people around the world.

By the way, China is already ahead of other countries in the development of maglevs. For example, in Shanghai, a maglev transports passengers daily at a speed of 430 km/h, and new models are being developed that will be able to move even faster. There are even projects for trains in vacuum tubes, where the speed would approach 1000 km/h.

In addition, China is already working on accelerating rockets for space using magnetic rails.
