The United States has added new Chinese companies to an export blacklist to limit Beijing's access to advanced technology, the first such move under the Trump administration aimed at tightening controls over China's development of AI and military technology, CNBC reports.
The US Commerce Department has added 80 organizations to an "entity list" that bars American companies from supplying them with technology without special government permission. The Chinese companies are accused of supporting the country's military modernization, including the development of supercomputers, quantum technologies and high-performance AI chips.
The list also includes six subsidiaries of Inspur Group, which was already under sanctions by the Joe Biden administration, and two firms found guilty of supplying technology to Huawei and its HiSilicon subsidiary.
Experts say Chinese companies continue to find ways to access American technology through intermediaries. In response, the US plans to step up efforts to track the smuggling of semiconductors from NVIDIA and AMD.
The restrictions come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing, including tariffs on Chinese goods. However, China is actively developing affordable, open-source AI models such as DeepSeek, increasing competition for American companies.
US Deputy Secretary of Commerce Jeffrey Kessler said that the country will not allow its technologies to be used in China's military developments, including hypersonic missiles and drones.
