Financial reports in the UK have confirmed that Jurassic World: Dominion has become the most expensive film ever made. According to Forbes, the sixth installment in the franchise cost $584 million to produce, $72 million more than Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Part of the cost was covered by the British film tax credit program, which compensated $115 million, a record for the initiative, which has been in operation since 2007. Another $3.7 million was provided as part of the pandemic job support program. As a result, the final cost of the project was about $465 million — still a record.
The COVID-19 pandemic is cited as the main factor behind the budget increase. The cast spent five months in isolation at the Langley Hotel near Pinewood Studios. Despite the high costs and mixed reviews from critics, the film grossed over $1 billion at the box office.
The next film in the series, Jurassic World Rebirth, will launch a new storyline without Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Its budget is expected to be capped at $265 million.
