iPadOS 19 should get closer to macOS — Gurman

For a long time, even certain Apple advertising slogans hinted that the iPad should become a replacement for the computers we are used to. And in many cases, this is indeed the case. However, not all users can completely replace their laptop or desktop with a tablet. And a kind of bottleneck here is the operating system. Or rather, its limitations.

Bloobmerg's Mark Gurman shared an inside look at the future of iPadOS in his weekly Power On article. In addition to the fact that WWDC 2025 is expected to see a "convergence" of the external design of all operating systems, the OS's capabilities for tablets will also be a significant topic.

This includes improvements to “performance, multitasking, and window management,” as well as some external updates that will make iPadOS more similar to macOS. This way, all the capabilities of modern chips will really make more sense, and the iPad has long been able to compete with a significant number of regular laptops in this regard.

"For years, users have said that it feels like the hardware capabilities of the iPad are well ahead of its software. That could soon be changing," writes Mark Gurman.

However, Gurman also warns that you shouldn't expect macOS to "migrate" to the iPad. However, he notes that the changes will be significant enough to satisfy a certain number of users, although he can't go into details yet. And apparently, we'll see the company's first plans for updating iPadOS in early summer, and the "software" will be prepared for the release of updated iPads with Apple M5 chips.
