Intel aims to make laptops as modular as PCs
Intel is aiming to make laptops more modular, focusing on original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) rather than end users, Android Headlines reports, citing PCWorld. The company is proposing standards that will allow manufacturers to create universal motherboards for different laptop models. The solution is aimed at simplifying the production process and reducing costs.
Intel India President Gokul Subramaniam said that the latest generations of their laptop boards have become more modular. This will help companies like Asus or Acer to develop multiple versions of laptops without major redesign.
For example, Intel could design one board for all 16-inch laptops with dual fans and another for all 14-inch models with single fans. This would allow manufacturers to simply insert the boards into cases with different component configurations.
Intel also offers boards that can be divided into smaller sections, which will allow for greater flexibility when customizing orders. The company hopes that these standards will gain industry-wide acceptance, speeding up the development of new components and allowing users to upgrade individual parts without replacing the entire laptop.
This approach could help Intel overcome the financial difficulties caused by the rise of ARM processors. Whether this will turn things around for the company remains to be seen.
