Apple is working on a foldable iPad Pro, and one of the prototypes may feature under-screen Face ID, according to an insider from Digital Chat Station on Weibo.

According to the insider, the engineering sample of the device features an 18.8-inch foldable display with a “metal superstructure lens” that integrates Face ID components for facial recognition under the screen.

Rumors about Apple's foldable device have been circulating for a long time, but it's still unclear whether it will be an ‌iPad‌ or a Mac. Analyst DSCC predicts the release of an 18.8-inch foldable iPad Pro with an OLED screen in 2027. At the same time, Ming-Chi Kuo reports that LG plans to start producing foldable displays for the MacBook in 2025. The Wall Street Journal also wrote that Apple is creating a foldable device about 19 inches in size, which should look like a laptop.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on a foldable iPad that could be released in 2028, aiming to create a display without a visible bend. The company is also developing a foldable iPhone in a book format. It could be released in 2026, but instead of Face ID, it will have Touch ID in the side button due to limited internal space.

Under-screen Face ID technology has long been expected for the iPhone but has yet to be implemented. If these rumors are confirmed, the foldable iPad will be the first Apple device with the feature.
