Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon had an incredibly successful opening weekend, grossing $197.8 million since its release on June 13, 2025, according to Hypebeast.
In the North American box office, the film adaptation of the popular cartoon series grossed $83.7 million. This allowed the new film to take first place at the domestic box office, displacing another film adaptation of the cartoon Lilo and Stitch, which lasted in the top for three weeks.
Globally, "How to Train Your Dragon" is also showing solid results - the film collected $114.1 million over the weekend. The financial success is also confirmed by the audience's reaction. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 77% freshness from critics, and a whopping 98% from everyone else.
The fact that Dean DeBlois, who worked on the original animated trilogy, directed the film adaptation certainly didn't hinder these results. During the presentation of one of the trailers, DeBlois said that due to time and budget constraints, the animated film team was unable to implement all of their ideas and that a modern film adaptation would allow "to deepen the relationships between the characters, add more depth and mythology that was perhaps lacking in the original version."
