In exactly one month, on August 25, 2025, Google will officially shut down shortened links on goo.gl. The company first announced its intentions back in July 2024. Instead of the page content, users will be shown a 404 / Not Found error.

For a year now, the company has been showing an interim page warning that short links will eventually stop working, and if you go directly to goo.gl, you can see a support page where the company explains its decision.

In 2019, Google discontinued support for the Google URL Shortener tool, but the links that had already been generated continued to work until 2024, when the company announced that it would shut them down in a year, as over 99% of these links were no longer used.

This decision is justified by the fact that in recent years there have been many changes in how people find content on the Internet, as well as the emergence of a large number of new popular URL shortening services.
