Google introduces new Windows search app that resembles Spotlight on Mac

- 17 September, 09:50 AM

Google has introduced an experimental search app for Windows that resembles Spotlight on the Mac. The app is currently available in Search Labs for personal accounts and lets you quickly search for information in your computer's files, Google Drive, and the web. You can launch the search by pressing Alt + Space.

The app has a Chrome-like installation process and requires authorization. It has Google Lens built in, allowing you to highlight images on the screen, search, or translate text. For example, you can highlight an example from your math homework and ask AI Mode to find the solution.

The interface supports different tabs: all results, images, purchases, videos, as well as a special AI mode. Light and dark themes are available. This partially duplicates the capabilities of Windows Search, which was recently improved in Copilot Plus PC, but offers closer integration with Google services.

After installation, a search bar appears on the desktop, which can be moved and resized. It can be easily minimized by pressing Alt + Space. In the settings, you can disable AI Mode or change the key combination for launching it.

The app is currently only available in English and only to users in the US with Windows 10 or later.
