Google showed off Android XR glasses with Gemini during a TED Talk

- 18 April, 10:20 AM

Google unveiled a prototype of its Android XR-powered smart glasses during a TED Talk. This is the first public demonstration of the new product in front of a large audience, which may indicate the company's readiness to take the product to the next level.

The glasses are equipped with a Gemini assistant. During the demonstration, several examples of its work were shown. The presenter asked Gemini to help remember the title of a white book on the shelf behind her — and the AI quickly gave the correct answer. Then she asked where her lost hotel key card might be. Again, Gemini coped with the task. Finally, Gemini showed the direction of travel for a walk — the route appeared right on the built-in display in the glasses' lenses.

Although the device is still in the prototype stage, the capabilities demonstrated were impressive. The interface looks smooth and easy to use. In addition, the glasses are almost the same size as regular glasses, and are much more compact than the Meta XR glasses, which were created in collaboration with Ray-Ban.

Given that Apple, Meta, and Samsung are actively developing the smart glasses market, Google's move signals serious intentions to become a leader in this area.
