Google Photos gets a new design and new photo viewing features

Google has announced an update to its Google Photos app that should make gallery navigation easier and image information more accessible. The changes are already available to iPhone users and will be coming to the Android version "soon":

  • Light theme: The background of the photo viewer screen now automatically adjusts to the device's system theme, providing a unified visual style;
  • Quick access to metadata: the date, time and location of the shot are now displayed above each photo, and icons sometimes appear below them for managing Live Photo or Motion Photo, changing the category, saving shared images and managing memory;
  • Streamlined action menus: The About, Create, Cast, Save As, Download, and Delete from Device buttons have been moved to the three-dot menu in the top right corner. Google Lens, which was previously located in the toolbar, is now also available in this menu. Instead, the toolbar now has an Add to option for archiving, sorting into albums, or moving to a secure folder;
  • Manage your stack and series of shots: Each series of shots or stack has its own menu with three dots next to the thumbnail. From there, you can change the main frame, delete individual images, expand the stack, or perform group actions on selected photos.

Google emphasizes that none of the existing features have been removed — they have just moved the tools to more logical places.
