Google Maps will use all available screens in the car for navigation
A recent update to Google Maps for Android Auto will allow users to use navigation features on any available screen in the car, 9to5Google reports.
Previously, Google Maps only displayed navigation prompts on the main display and via voice prompts, but with the latest update, they will also appear on the main instrument cluster. This feature is already available on the Polestar 2.
The innovation is similar to the feature in Android Automotive, which displays estimated time of arrival, distance to destination, and duration of the trip on the dashboard. In the case of Android Auto, this is also accompanied by navigation prompts with driving directions.
When using the instrument cluster for navigation, direction prompts will appear as pop-ups, allowing drivers to avoid being distracted by the center display while still maintaining access to other vehicle status information.
This change has already worked in Google Maps on the Samsung Galaxy S25 via Android Auto, but it is not yet known when the innovation will be more widely distributed.
