Google learns from OpenAI's mistakes and makes Gemini more personalized
Google has begun a phased rollout of the auto-remember feature in Gemini. Once enabled, the chatbot will be able to recall key details and preferences from the user without any additional commands, using them to personalize responses. This is an expansion of last year's option, which required you to manually specify what to remember.
The feature will be enabled by default, but can be disabled in the Personal Context section of Gemini settings by turning off the Your past chats with Gemini option. The update will be available first to Gemini 2.5 Pro users in select countries, followed by Gemini 2.5 Flash users.
This came amid a wave of criticism of the new OpenAI GPT-5 model, which was accused of being "cold." Some users even admitted that they felt like they had lost a friend. In response to such sentiments, Google emphasizes that Gemini will maintain an individual approach and will be able to remember the context of the conversation without additional reminders. By the way, the memory function also recently appeared in the Claude chatbot from Anthropic.
As for other innovations, Google is also changing the privacy settings in Gemini: the Apps Activity parameter will receive a new name - Keep Activity. If activated, the company will be able to use selected files and photos uploaded to Gemini to improve services. This option is disabled by default.
Temporary Chats will also be added, which will not be stored in history, will not be used for personalization, and will be deleted after 72 hours. They are intended for private or one-time requests to avoid affecting future responses.
