Google accidentally reveals details of its new Material 3 Expressive design system for Android
Google will present a new version of its design system — Material 3 Expressive — at the I/O 2025 conference. This is evidenced by the descriptions of the sessions on the official website of the event and the Google blog, which was published in advance and then deleted, writes 9to5Google.
Material 3 Expressive will be the next stage in the development of Material You (Material 3), which Google introduced in 2021. The updated design should make interfaces more emotionally appealing: the blog talked about "bold use of shapes and color" to create "exciting user experiences."
The company claims that the new approach increases the visibility of key interface elements, which contributes to better usability, especially for older people. At the same time, Google emphasizes that Expressive Design is not a universal approach, so developers should adhere to proven patterns.
Google promises to provide developer materials, including code examples, immediately after the presentation.
