Google is shutting down the Instant Apps feature
Google has confirmed that it will close Instant Apps for Android at the end of 2025. The company is citing low usage of the feature, The Verge reports.
Instant Apps, introduced in 2017, allowed developers to create lightweight versions of Android apps that ran without installation, allowing users to quickly get a feel for an app or game before installing it.
The first to notice the warning about the end of Instant App support was developer Leon Omelan in Android Studio.
"Instant Apps support will be removed by Google Play in December 2025. Publishing and all Google Play Instant APIs will no longer work. Tooling support will be removed in Android Studio Otter Feature Drop."
Google spokeswoman Nia Carter later confirmed the changes in a statement to The Verge, noting that Instant Apps had low usage and engagement as users chose other ways to discover new apps.
