Google has integrated Gemini’s custom chatbots, known as Gems, into Google Workspace apps — Docs, Sheets, Gmail, Slides, and Drive. Gems are available in the sidebar and allow users to use their own or pre-built AI assistants without having to switch to a separate tab.
Gems are tailored to specific tasks, from creating branded content to preparing for exams or sales. Users can upload files for context, and Google offers built-in Gems for editing text, coding, or generating ideas for pitches. You can create a custom Gem in a separate tab or through an option in the panel.
The update, which began rolling out on July 2, supports Workspace features like @mentions and file access. It is available to all Workspace users with access to Gemini, but full implementation may take up to 15 days.
