Google Maps app now available on Garmin smartwatches
Garmin has announced the official Google Maps app for its line of smartwatches. The app will be able to display navigation instructions that will be transmitted from a smartphone to the watch.
Unlike the full Google Maps app for Wear OS, where you can search for places and use navigation independently, the Garmin version is designed only for viewing an already created route from your smartphone. The smartwatch receives turn-by-turn directions with turn points, vibrates before each new instruction, and allows you to view up to three next turns by tapping the screen.
Walking, running, and cycling modes are supported. The watch continues to record the user's physical activity while navigating.
Google Maps for Garmin is available through the Connect IQ app store. The list of compatible devices includes over 90 models, including the Fenix, Forerunner, Venu, Epix series and others. It can only be used with an Android smartphone - iOS support is not currently provided.
