France may oblige X Mask to verify users' ages due to pornography on the platform

- 9 June, 01:42 PM

The French government is considering classifying Elon Musk's X platform as an adult content site. If approved, the social network would be required to implement age verification to limit minors' access to pornographic material, Politico reports.

The Ministry of Digital Technologies notes that X has been allowing the publication of pornographic content since 2024, and therefore must comply with the same rules as other similar resources.

Minister Clara Chappaz's team is currently analyzing whether to officially add X to the list of sites that are required to verify the age of users. If the decision is made, the social network will receive an official warning requiring it to either remove 18+ content or restrict access to it through age verification.

France is actively strengthening online child protection by requiring pornographic platforms to verify the age of users. If the requirements are ignored, sites can be fined, removed from search engines or blocked completely.

By the way, Tanzania recently blocked X due to pornographic content, and last year the Belgian media regulator expressed concern that the social network was gradually turning into a porn site.

Company X has not yet officially commented on the situation.

As a reminder, it was recently reported that the EU wants to restrict children's access to social media and introduce a "digital age of majority." This proposal is led by Greece, with support from France and Spain.
