Apple will use a unique Samsung display for its foldable iPhone - it has never been used in similar gadgets before
Apple's foldable iPhone will feature a new type of display developed by Samsung that has never been seen in similar devices before, MacRumors reports.
According to Korean insider yeux1122, the display will meet Apple's requirements for thickness, power efficiency, and brightness levels. He says that this display will be manufactured using a special process for which the company will have a patent.
Samsung was able to achieve a breakthrough in display thickness by integrating the touchscreen directly into the display panel. This reduced the overall thickness by approximately 19% compared to the latest components used in the Galaxy Fold. Other benefits include a lighter design and a stiffer structure.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the foldable iPhone will have a 7.8-inch internal screen and a 5.5-inch external screen, two rear cameras and one selfie camera. At the same time, the device will receive Touch ID, which will be built into the power button, instead of Face ID. The smartphone will also have a dense battery, and its overall thickness will be from 9 to 9.5 millimeters when folded, and 4.5 mm when unfolded.
Samsung currently uses a separate touch layer placed on top of the OLED panel in its foldable smartphones. However, Apple will use in-cell touch technology, which is the iPhone standard, for its displays. In this case, the touch layer will be integrated into the TFT display layer, which allows for a thinner thickness, faster response, and no gap between the laminations.
The display design is described as a "bar-type" display that will look almost identical to the standard iPhone when unfolded. It will lack the characteristic visible creases and gaps at the hinges. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously reported that the iPhone will have an "almost invisible" crease when unfolded.
Samsung is specifically trying to reduce the thickness of its own Galaxy Fold 7 to meet Apple's display supply requirements. In addition to structural improvements, the new display design technology will provide significant improvements in color reproduction and brightness, with increases in both peak and typical levels.
Previously, there were also rumors that the foldable iPhone could cost between $2,100 and $2,300, more expensive than the company's main competitors, such as the Galaxy Fold or Pixel Fold.
