Tab grouping is one of the most anticipated features in Firefox. Users of the browser have been asking for it for a long time, especially since 2022, when the developers launched the Mozilla Connect community platform. And now, a few years later, the feature has finally arrived.
Tab grouping is not a new feature, and like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, Firefox will allow users to create groups, give them names, and change their colors. You can add new tabs to these groups, regardless of how many you have open: three, ten, or even a hundred.
The browser developers plan to make this feature smarter with artificial intelligence. Once the update is ready, Firefox will be able to automatically group open tabs and suggest names for them. Mozilla also claims that the entire process will happen on the device, so no data will be shared with third parties.
In its announcement, the company emphasizes the importance of community engagement and the process of selecting features that users most want to see. The topic of tab grouping appeared on Mozilla Connect just a day after the platform launched, before the company had even started officially talking about it.
"It’s still the number one most upvoted post on Mozilla Connect," said John Siddoway, who helps Firefox teams deliver useful information. "Even when the feature was in beta, people were still voting for it and saying, ‘We want this.’"
