F1 The Movie, the first major theatrical release from Apple Original Films, has surpassed $500 million in global box office grosses. The total to date is about $509 million, with $165 million of that coming from the U.S. and another $344 million from international markets, according to 9to5Mac.
The film was released on June 27, debuting to $144 million in its opening weekend, beating analysts' estimates. Despite a modest performance in the United States, the film performed strongly in Europe and Asia, particularly in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan.
Apple has yet to announce a digital release date, but the premiere on Apple TV+ is expected in October. Due to high fees, the company, along with Warner Bros., is in no hurry to shorten the theatrical window. In August, F1 will be re-released in IMAX, which could add several tens of millions to the total box office.
The film is expected to close the box office with over $550 million. However, due to significant production and marketing costs (according to unofficial data, the budget exceeded $250 million), the breakeven point for Apple may be around $600 million. Despite this, the result is considered successful - F1 became the highest-grossing film in the Apple Original Films library.
The film starred Brad Pitt as a veteran motorsports driver returning to racing. The film also featured real Formula One drivers and was partially filmed during real Grand Prix events.
Apple's future plans for theatrical distribution remain unclear. While the company continues to invest in major projects, its main strategy remains to release films directly on Apple TV+. Expected by the end of 2025 are, among others, "Highest 2 Lowest " with Denzel Washington (premiering September 5) and "The Lost Bus" with Matthew McConaughey.
