Epic Games acquired Loci to better categorize assets across its services

- 3 April, 05:35 PM

Epic Games has announced the acquisition of Loci, a platform that uses machine learning to search, tag, and create 3D assets. Loci's technologies will be integrated into the Fab marketplace and Unreal Editor for Fortnite. Details of the deal, including the amount, were not disclosed.

"Today, when an author uploads a 3D asset, they have no metadata associated with it unless they manually tag their work, making accurate categorization of content time-consuming and difficult to find. Loci models quickly and automatically categorize 3D assets, accurately and at the right scale, making it much easier to find, manage, and use content," Epic Games said in a statement.

Epic Games is integrating Loci’s technologies to improve asset discovery, sharing, and visibility in the Fab marketplace, as well as to automatically index user assets in Unreal Engine for Fortnite (EUFN). The company also notes that Loci’s 3D similarity detection solution for IP protection will help detect potential IP violations and expand moderation capabilities across the Epic ecosystem.

Loci's computer vision models are trained on over 1 million 3D assets, meaning they can understand almost any visual style. They also support all major 3D and 2D file formats.
